標點符號的運用(Punctuation)
當我們說話時,會提高音亮來加強語氣,會停頓來表示語意說畢,而在文字表達上,標點符號便擔當著重要的角色,例如:表示句子完結,詢問句,對話等。有時候,標點符號更可將說話時較難表達的意思提出來,如直接引述別人的語句或文章。如果要讀者明白文章內容,便須正確運用標點符號了。
第三課:分號 Semicolon

分號最常用於兩子句之間,其分隔度較逗號為,大但較句號為小,通常用作表示句子中兩子句意思相連。
(1)
以分號化替句號來分隔兩相關獨立子句(Independent
Clauses).
Independent
clause;
independent clause.
例子:
The
student parking lot is half empty at 3:30p.m.;
this must be a commuter campus.
Spring
is here; the birds are
warbling with joy.
注意:
如果使用
coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet or so),則用逗號
comma,而不是分號,詳情請看第一課之逗號。
(2)
當其中一獨立子句(Independent
Clause)中包含逗號時,以分號來分隔兩子句.
Independent
clause; coordinating
conjunction independent clause, containing commas.
Independent
clause, one that contains commas;
coordinating conjunction independent clause, one that contains
commas.
例子:
For
anything worth having one must pay the price;
and the price is always work, patience, love, self-sacrifice.
(3)
當要使用連接副詞(Conjunctive
Adverbs, e.g. therefore, however)或其他連接語(Transitional
Expressions, e.g. in addition, on the other hand)來聯結子句時,以分號作分隔.

例子:
His
mother claimed to be interested in swimming;
however, she didn’t know the
difference between orthodox breaststroke(蛙式)and
butterfly stroke(蝴蝶式).
If
you give children too much freedom, they will never learn to control
themselves;
on the other hand, if you give them too
little, they will never become self-reliant.
(4)
利用分號來分開較長或含有逗號的串聯字、短語或子句.
Independent
clause that includes a series of items, each or all of which contain
commas, another item in the series, another item in the series.
例子:
We
need the following representatives: a person who speaks Mandarin,
Japanese, or Korean; a lawyer with a background in civil rights; and
a professor of art, literature, or some other area within the
humanities.

避免錯用分號
I)在一依賴子句子獨立子句之間,不使用分號
例子:
錯誤句子:
Although the new computers had
arrived at the college;
the computer lab was still being built.
正確句子:
Although the new computers had
arrived at the college,
the computer lab was still being built.
II)在介紹資料或名單時,不使用分號,而是用冒號(:)
例子:
錯誤句子:
The students’ demands
included the following;
an expanded menu in the cafeteria, better janitorial services, and
more up-to-date textbooks.
正確句子:
The students’ demands
included the following: an
expanded menu in the cafeteria, better janitorial services, and more
up-to-date textbooks.
